Uziel and his colleagues recently published their findings in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/03344355.2019.1650491\">Tel Aviv: Journal of the Institute of Archaeology.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>Historians long assumed that the Roman-appointed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/history\/magazine\/2016\/11-12\/king-herod-judaea-holy-land-rome-new-testament\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King Herod the Great<\/a>, who died around 4 B.C., was responsible for most of the great construction efforts that transformed ancient Jerusalem into a major pilgrimage and tourist center. But analysis of more than 100 coins found beneath the stepped street point to the start and completion of the effort under Pilate, who ruled for about a decade starting in A.D. 26 or 27.<\/p>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>The latest coins discovered beneath the paving stones date to around A.D. 31. The most common Jerusalem coins from the first century were minted after 40, \u201cso not having them beneath the street means the street was built before their appearance, in other words only in the time of Pilate,\u201d says Donald Ariel, a coin expert with the Israel Antiquities Authority.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>Pilate served under Emperor Tiberius, and contemporary writers mention incidents in which the governor incited Jewish anger by ignoring the taboo on graven images, and incurred the people\u2019s wrath for stealing Temple funds to pay for a new aqueduct. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/culture\/2018\/12\/ancient-jerusalem-map-jesus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See maps that imagine what Jerusalem looked like in the time of Jesus.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>The Christian Gospels also accuse the governor of ordering the Crucifixion of Jesus, likely on charges of sedition. The Roman-Jewish historian Josephus contends that Pilate was removed by the emperor for ordering an attack on Samaritans in the north of Judaea and returned to Rome in disgrace. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/culture\/people-in-the-bible\/why-caiaphas-broke-jewish-law-indict-jesus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet the high priest behind Jesus&#8217;s rushed trial.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>Tel Aviv University archaeologist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/scientific-contributions\/2055213063_Nahshon_Szanton\">Nahshon Szanton<\/a>, the lead author of the study, speculates that Pilate\u2019s construction of the street \u201cmay have been to appease the residents of Jerusalem,\u201d as well as to \u201caggrandize his name through major building projects.\u201d In A.D. 70 the street was buried under rubble following a revolt between Jewish groups that led to the Roman destruction of the city. Many of its slabs were subsequently reused for later projects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-4858-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.andrewlawler.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/13620530_Rome_and_Christianity_ngc_660.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewlawler.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/13620530_Rome_and_Christianity_ngc_660.mp4\">https:\/\/www.andrewlawler.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/13620530_Rome_and_Christianity_ngc_660.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aiar.org\/albright-news-no-17-2012\/\">Matthew Adams<\/a>, director of Jerusalem\u2019s W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, who was not involved in the work, says the results provide insight into the time when Rome exerted direct control over Judaea. \u201cIt also provides some evidence of cooperation between the Roman authorities and the Jewish religious authorities,\u201d he adds, noting that most known sources emphasize tension between the two.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>But\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/religion.unc.edu\/_people\/full-time-faculty\/magness\/\">Jodi Magness<\/a>, an archaeologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is not wholly convinced. \u201cThe material they are finding is coming from fills that might have been brought in with wheelbarrows from anywhere, so I\u2019m skeptical of the dating,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is not impossible that Pilate was responsible for the construction, but that is not the only, or even the most likely, possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"marketing-promo article-bottom-marketing-promo\">\n<div class=\"marketing-promo-inside-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>Magness is also critical of the method used to unearth the stepped street. Instead of digging from the surface down, excavators are boring a subway-size tunnel to expose the street. \u201cYou don\u2019t have context\u2014you can\u2019t see what\u2019s above or to the side. It\u2019s unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>Uziel argues that tunneling was necessary, given the densely populated neighborhood above, and that the team is able to collect careful stratigraphic information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>The effort, funded in large part by a Jewish organization called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofdavid.org.il\/en\/The-Ir-David-Foundation\">City of David Foundation<\/a>, has drawn international criticism for its location as well as methods. Palestinians living and working in this East Jerusalem area complain about damage to their homes and businesses from the digging, while the central focus on a famous period of Jewish history has irked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alt-arch.org\/en\/\">others<\/a>. The Palestinian Authority decried the tunnel as part of a plan to \u201cJudaize\u201d East Jerusalem, which it and much of the rest of the world considers occupied territory.<\/p>\n<div class=\"parbase smartbody section has-p text\">\n<p>During a ceremony last June inaugurating part of the tunnel, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman dismissed these concerns.
