PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY MEGIDDO EXPEDITION<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p><span class=\"smartbody__lead-in\">THEY ARE BEST<\/span>\u00a0known as the people who lived \u201cin a land flowing with milk and honey\u201d until they were vanquished by the ancient Israelites and disappeared from history. But a scientific report published today reveals that the genetic heritage of the Canaanites survives in many modern-day Jews and Arabs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/fulltext\/S0092-8674(20)30487-6\">study in\u00a0<i>Cell<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>also shows that migrants from the distant Caucasus Mountains combined with the indigenous population to forge the unique Canaanite culture that dominated the area between Egypt and Mesopotamia during the Bronze Age, lasting from approximately 3500 B.C. until 1200 B.C.<\/p>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>The team extracted ancient DNA from the bones of 73 individuals buried over the course of 1,500 years at five Canaanite sites scattered across Israel and Jordan. They also factored in data from an additional 20 individuals from four sites previously reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>\u201cIndividuals from all sites are highly genetically similar,\u201d says co-author and molecular evolutionist Liran Carmel of Jerusalem\u2019s Hebrew University. PHOTOGRAPH BY MAHMOUD ZAYAT, AFP\/GETTY<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The study\u2014a collaborative effort between Carmel\u2019s lab, the ancient DNA lab at Harvard University headed by geneticist David Reich, and other groups\u2014was by far the largest of its type in the region. Its findings are the latest in a series of recent breakthroughs in our understanding of this mysterious people who left behind few written records.<\/p>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Marc Haber, a geneticist at the Wellcome Trust\u2019s Sanger Institute in Hinxton, United Kingdom, co-led a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2017\/07\/canaanite-bible-ancient-dna-lebanon-genetics-archaeology\/\">2017 study of five Canaanite individuals<\/a>\u00a0from the coastal town of Sidon. The results showed that modern Lebanese can trace more than 90 percent of their genetic ancestry to Canaanites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-h2\">\n<h2>&#8220;Thieves and Canaanites&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>As Egyptians built pyramids and Mesopotamians constructed ziggurats some 4,500 years ago, the Canaanites began to develop towns and cities between these great powers. They first appear in the historical record around 1800 B.C., when the king of the city-state of Mari in today\u2019s eastern Syria complained about \u201cthieves and Canaanites.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Diplomatic correspondence written five centuries later mentions several Canaanite kings, who often struggled to maintain independence from Egypt. \u201cThe land of Canaan is your land and its kings are your servants,\u201d acknowledged one Babylonian monarch in a letter to the Egyptian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/magazine\/2017\/05\/akhenaten-revolutionary-egypt-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pharaoh Akhenaten<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Biblical texts, written many centuries later, insist that Yahweh promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites after their escape from Egypt. Jewish scripture says the newcomers eventually triumphed, but archaeological evidence doesn\u2019t show widespread destruction of Canaanite populations. Instead, they appear to have been gradually overpowered by later invaders such as the Philistines, Greeks, and Romans.<\/p>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>The Canaanites spoke a Semitic language and were long thought to derive from earlier populations that settled in the region thousands of years before. But archaeologists have puzzled over red-and-black pottery discovered at Canaanite sites that closely resembles ceramics found in the Caucasus Mountains, some 750 miles to the northwest. Historians also have noted that many Canaanite names derive from Hurrian, a non-Semitic language originating in the Caucasus.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Whether this resulted from long-distance trade or migration was uncertain. The new study demonstrates that significant numbers of people, and not just goods, were moving around during humanity\u2019s first era of cities and empires. The genes of Canaanite individuals proved to be a mix of local Neolithic people and the Caucasus migrants, who began showing up in the region around the start of the Bronze Age.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Carmel adds that the migration appears to have been more than a one-time event, and \u201ccould have involved multiple waves throughout the Bronze Age.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>One brother and sister who lived around 1500 B.C. in Megiddo, in what is now northern Israel, were from a family that had migrated relatively recently from the northeast. The team also noted that individuals at two coastal sites\u2014Ashkelon in Israel and Sidon in Lebanon\u2014show slightly more genetic diversity. And Haber from the Wellcome Trust noted that the quantity of DNA results is particularly impressive, given the difficulty of extracting samples from old bones buried in such a warm climate that can quickly degrade genetic material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-h2\">\n<h2>Who came first?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Both Israeli and Palestinian politicians claim the region of Israel and the Palestinian territories is the ancestral home of their people, and maintain that the other group was a late arrival. \u201cWe are the Canaanites,\u201d asserted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas last year. \u201cThis land is for its people\u2026who were here 5,000 years ago.\u201d Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said recently that the ancestors of modern Palestinians \u201ccame from the Arabian peninsula to the Land of Israel thousands of years\u201d after the Israelites.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>The new study suggests that despite tumultuous changes in the area since the Bronze Age, \u201cthe present-day inhabitants of the region are, to a large extent, descended from its ancient residents,\u201d concludes Schwartz\u2014although Carmel adds that there are hints of later demographic shifts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p>Carmel hopes to soon expand the findings by collecting DNA from the remains of those who can be identified as Judean, Moabite, Ammonite, and other groups mentioned in the Bible and other texts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"smartbody text parbase section has-p\">\n<p class=\"article-controller__last-paragraph\">\u201cOne could analyze \u2018Canaanite\u2019 as opposed to \u2018Israelite\u2019 individuals,\u201d adds archaeologist Mary Ellen Buck, who wrote a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wipfandstock.com\/the-canaanites.html\">book on the Canaanites<\/a>. \u201cThe Bible claims that these are distinct and mutually antagonistic groups, yet there&#8217;s reason to believe that they were very closely related.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study of ancient DNA traces the surprising heritage of these mysterious Bronze Age people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":4917,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"nf_dc_page":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4914","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-national-geographic"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>DNA from the Bible&#039;s Canaanites lives on in modern Arabs and Jews &#8226;
